Sailing our 1978 Cat 25 is great fun. We have had larger sailboats, but we needed a swing keel boat for our new home on the water. It is so much easier to handle then our bigger boats, and that makes us smile! Just one problem: The cable to the swing keel vibrates when the keel is down (I think that is what is making the noise), sometimes it sounds like a power boat! What can I do to quite this down? I am sure this has been discussed before - but we are new to swing keels.

Hi Mike,

'Sounds like you're describing keel cable hum. It should stop humming if you put a little slack in the cable. Frankly, I kinda' like it, but I guess it can get on your nerves after a while.

Welcome to the group!

Yup... I like it too.

It's a poor man's speedometer.

Hi,
have been cautioned against slacking the cable too much- apparently it increases the load on the keel trunk and increases the potential for a "bounce and bash". I leave the cable taut, with the keel fully lowered, and enjoy the buzz when it happens!

I also kind of like it, but Cap'n Dave tires of it after a bit. I've found it only takes a small fraction of a turn of the winch and it's gone. Then you're just listening to the wind in the sails and water on the hull...unless you've got a singer on board .
