I found new bearings for my Barient 17 winches at Australia Yacht Winch Co. The bearings are stainless but the cages are plastic/nylon or some synthetic material. I'm thinking a non petroleum lubricant would be less harmful to the cages. Any recommendations?

I thought the bearings on my Barients were shot. They growled something awful, and were really hard to turn. I took out the bearings and washed them in gasoline and re-installed them and lubricated them, and they work like new. They were caked with grease impregnated with salt, and it took some serious scrubbing to get it all off all the bearings. Unless they're clearly bad, don't buy new ones without trying to clean them first.

An old time Chesapeake sailor and reputed winch expert suggested that I lubricate them with ordinary 30 weight motor oil instead of grease. He said salt gets into the grease and makes them growl. He said they should be cleaned and re-oiled every year. I tried it this year and the oil ran down the fiberglass onto the cockpit seats. Next year I'm going to use the winch grease that Barient makes specifically for their winches, and plan on cleaning and re-lubing them about every second or third year. The old timer's advice is probably good for hard core racers, but for us ordinary sailors, I think ordinary winch grease is more practical.

Thanks for the reply Steve. The cages on mine were cracked in several places. I cleaned and greased them but they were pretty well shot. As soon as they got a load on them, they just wouldn't turn. I sail in fresh water so cleaning the winches and bearings wasn't as bad as you descibe. But the cracking of the cages made me wonder if petroleum based lubricant may have damaged them.
