Hi all! Christmas present for the wife and I is a NEW INTERIOR for our '85 Catalina 25 (traditional). After reading all 15 pages of "fabric" in the archives, I'm getting some mixed info that I was hoping someone could help with. I'm seeing anything from 15 yards to 20 yards for the fabric and 10yds-16yds for the vinyl. Can anyone confirm a good # for me? Does anyone have any sketches/drawings/notes they could email me that would help when I go to an upholsterererer? Thanks gang!
Ed - most upholsterers will take the cushions and all and redo everything for you with including taking the measurements, replacing the cushions if needed, etc.
You might consider just buying a new set from Catalina direct. We found that our set that we had redone could have purchased 2 new sets...
Because we were young and stupid. The guy does great work, but we decided to get them done on a rush job with top of the line fabric. Most places aren’t going to cost 1400 bucks. Good upholstery shops will have you bring everything in, help you select the fabrics and vinyl and measure and quote you based on your selections. Even if you told them it was going to be 10.34254 yards, they still want to measure for their own sanity.
I got brand new cusions for the Capri 25 from Catalina Yachts last year. $700.00 something like 14 cushions, up to date cloth on the tops, and vinyl on the bottoms. Nothing like a perfect fit.
The reason why yardage estimates vary is because Catalina 25s came in 3 different floor plans, with different sizes and shapes of cushions.
Also, many fabrics come in different widths, and the number of yards needed for a project will vary depending on the width of the fabric. In other words, you should determine how many yards of fabric you need of a certain width. Otherwise you could end up buying too much or too little fabric for the job.
Also, the pattern that you select can affect the number of yards needed, because you have some wasted fabric when you have to match the pattern at seams. A fabric with a small pattern will have less waste than a large pattern.
So...back to the original, yet edited question: Can anyone provide me the total yards needed for a '85 Catalina 25 (traditional)? (please specify width along with length)
First off. You can never have too much fabric. You can always make pillow cases, etc.
Second, If you feel like most of us about the useless 2nd berth in the quarter berth, consider omitting the q berth cushions, or make a single long cushion that goes full length where there is headroom. I now use the area under the cockpit for totes.
