Hi All, I am new to this forum. I am buying a 1977 25 tomorrow (if all goes well) and have poured over all the data, tips, and suggestions about buying this boat. The only thing I can not figure out is what the Pop-Top is on the 1977? Thanks in advance for your help, cheers.
Personally, I love the pop-top feature. In the raised position, it gives you a LOT of extra headroom. It is a bit on the heavy side, but you can buy a power-assist kit from Catalina Direct, and then you can raise it easily with one hand. It's not a good idea to sail with it in the raised position, but some people do ... you can get away with it if the winds are light and you make sure to secure it somehow so it doesn't come crashing down.
Hi Buzz, thanks for the link. I thought that is what it was but I just wanted to make sure. I have been out of sailing for 20 years as we raised our daughters, but now they are all in college so we can have a little fun. This is the first winter that I really wish that it was summer. I guess I will spend the winter under the tarp. Cheers.
Hi from Houghton Michigan and welcome to the group.
Although a few C25's did not, most were manufactured so that the top of the cabin pivoted up about 8" to increase the cabin head room while at anchor or docked. A canvas curtain was provided to enclose the resulting open area around the cabin. The pop top was secured with a screw-type hatch dog on eithter side of the top.
Although a nice option for taller folks - I'm 6'1", I've used mine twice in 16 years. Others have opened it while motoring on hot days. Some may even have opened it while under sail though I wouldn't recommend doing so.
When you get set up and ready to sail let me know. John Vining and I are planning on cruising the North Channel of Lake Huron next summer. You are welcome to join our group of two Catalina 25's (so far), the fledgling "Upper Great Lakes Cruising Club". We have both extensivley modified our boats for cruising (mine for racing and now cruising), so we, along with many others on the forum, can help to answer your questions.
Hi Al, are you in the Houghton as in Houghton Handcock? My best friend is graduating from MTU in December and I will be up for the cerimony(sp). I will let you know how it goes tomorrow and would love to do the north channel next summer. Cheers, Dennis.
Hi! I sail my 1977 C25 on Lake Murray in South Carolina and it gets extremely hot here in summer. I bought a "Mega-noodle" which is a foam noodle like the kids play with in the pool except it's about eight inches in diameter. I have cut this noodle into six inch lengths and place one under each corner of my partially raised pop-top while I am sailing. This makes a lot of difference in cabin ventilation and makes going below bearable.
Hi Andrew. That is a good idea. I lifted mine for the first time yesterday and it must weigh 70 pounds. I can't imagine it bouncing around too badly on the noodels as much as it weights. I can just stand straight in the slide top portion of the cabin so the poptop is great for me. I spent about an hour cleaning the forcabin today and my back is killing me. I had to stop every ten minutes to go to the back and stand straight. Cheers.
Yes Houghton, as in Houghton, Hancock, MTU, snow, cold, short sailing season, etc, etc.
What a coincidence. I am an MTU graduate. In my retired life I work part time in the university central ticket office. The commencment will take place in our building. Stop by and introduce yourself.
Glad to here that you have some interest in sailing with us. John or I will publish the particulars on the forum in the next couple of months. We'd like to get as many Great Lakes Catalina 25 owners together as possible.
Hi AL, I will stop by when I am up there. Are other boats welcome to tag along? I have two friends that are interested, one has a 30' Catalina and the other has a 34' Peerson (sp). Cheers.
