Anyone have a suggestion on how to drain or 'break' the siphon on the water lines. We are having some 'cold' weather here in Alabama (Friday night went down to 25 F) and I am concerned about any water that may be trapped in the lines.
I considered a light bulb in the boat but am concerned about fire!
I live in the cold Northeast, and one year I tried the "human-safe" antifreeze. It worked, but I ended up with a lot of black mildew in the lines. It took heavy duty clorox to clean the system.
Since then I have pumped all the water out of the lines until there is nothing left to pump. I leave them emptied in that manner for the entire winter. No freezing troubles to date, and no more mildew in the lines or tank.
I have to drain mine every winter as we pull the boat out. It gets cold here in Missouri. I use the great idea that was posted here by ???? of using a shop vac to blow the balast (250 WB), and I have a blaster pump to drain the fresh water tank. Then just to be safe I put in @ 2 gals of the Marine antifreeze to keep the lines from freezing. I didnt do that one winter and the valve uner the sink in the head cracked. Didnt notice it until there was about 6 gals of water in the bilge the next spring.
I just pump my tank out by hand, using both the pump in the head, as well as the pump in the galley. It I had a blaster pump I would use that. I'm sure it would work better/easier. I usually have to work the pump a long time near the end to get all the water out. It will pump sporadically with air and water mixed.
