little projects page I disassembled and oiled the interior today and decided to put it back with a twist. I am very schizo about the stock table. Love it when it is down, hate it when it is up. I do like the white better than the faux teak though. I wanted to be able to lock down the table when it is in use and used some quick connect clevis pins to do that. I drilled out the ears on the table, the wall fittings already have the holes. I am now sure the table will go no where if I leave it up while sailing. The lack of easy to reach storage has always aggravated me, we have so little shelf space and I wanted to add some to the bulkhead. I figured I would hinge the table and bump it out with the storage hidden behind it. The more I thought about that the less I liked it, (thought process upon request), what good it storage if you cannot get to it! If I was going to add storage to the bulkhead I needed a new home for the table when it is not in use. Last week I took out the water tank and all the plumbing except the drain in the vanity. It opened up a new area for storage under the starboard settee. I added piano hinges to both sections of the settee and laid down carpet in the hold. The table now sits very well in the old tank area and I was able to mount some storage items on the bulkhead, (yes the table still opens up). Our short fiddles aggravate me as well. I bought a new section of fiddle rail and a couple of spice racks, they are the same brand so the fiddle lath work matches. I took the old port fiddle rail and stacked it on the starboard rail so those fiddle turnings would match as well. The port rail is four fiddles shorter but with the speakers installed it looks fine having the top rail stop short on both ends. I put the spice rack and the new rail to port. I added battens on each side of the spice rack to provide additional toerail but the seat backs on an 89 are very high so you cannot see them. This has added real usable space to the settee shelves and I am very pleased with how it all looks as well. (I don't think the pictures do it justice.) I put the big tarp over the boat as well today, it was time. I have also added a "central vacuum", I vacuum constantly and my little handheld was a good one but lacked capacity. I found a little baby shop-vac at Sears and it sits in the shelf behind the head. he hose I use is long enough that I can reach everywhere except the quarterberth without moving the vacuum. Silly I know, but I am pleased.
Frank, I spied a rechargeable wet-dry vac at Target yesterday. It claims to be able to run 30 min per charge. Don't know about the suction though. It would be ideal for vacuming up all the Popcorn and crumbs from the kids.
Very good ideas, both practical & aesthetic. Can you post your source for the fiddle rail? Is your liquor shelf a drink holder for pedestel mounting that you've turned on it's side? I like it. Fortunately my favorite spirits fit in the existing pinrails, but I sure could use this storage idea for books that don't fit in them. Only wish I hadn't spied the dvd's, now I have "A Mighty Wind" stuck in my head...
The water tank is in the shed. We have potable water at our slips and I carry a couple gallons of water in jugs; one in the refrigerator and one in the ice chest/dry storage area. The teak is AFI brand and I have been buying things off the BoatUS ebay store, win a bid and then tell them hoe many you want at that price. I bout 3 binocular holders for $12 ea. The spice racks were $20 ea. and I don't remember the price of the fiddle. The liquor shelf is the more expensive cockpit pedestal mount unit. I am using the brackets to mount boxed speakers on the stern rail.
