In order to qualify for a 30' slip in my local marina, my LOA has to be no less than 30'. My 250 is 26'. Question: how would you extend the LOA of a 250 from 26' to 30'? I've already checked out MarTek's MT-100 dinghy davit but it only overhangs 33". Thanks for any tips and/or "tricks"

At my marina, you can 'qualify' for a larger slip by writing a larger check...boat size is irrelevant.

Our marina charges by length of boat or length of slip - whichever is larger!

The Long Beach, California Marine Bureau doesn't want any boats less than 30' to occupy "its" marinas, despite the fact that the marinas are public, tax supported facilities. Since most 30' boats have a LOA of more than 30', max 34'11", they make the extra slip fee bucks. The b.s. of this "rule" is, if I can extend the LOA of my 26' 250 to 30' I'll qualify for a slip. That's why I'm asking how best to add 4 more feet to either the bow or the stern.

Perhaps a few tricks you could use until the Marina Nazi's move on to their next "valued customer": 1. Install a VHF antenna on one of the rear pulpit seats and angle it back a bit. I had to remove mine for winter storage so the boat and trailer would fit in a 30 ft RV slot. 2. Install a phony bowsprit and remove it after they rent you the slip. See page 61 of the November 2005 Sail magazine for a picture of a moveable J105 bowsprit. Good luck !!!

I bet you will be at 30ft with the outboard tilted up. You need to factor that as well.

Tom's correct.The tilt of the motor adds alot.

Thanks for the tilt tip, but it wont woik; only "permanent" installations are measured. Removable engines don't count. Maybe a combo of a dinghy davit and a phoney bow sprit will do the trick.

I would argue the point about the outboard. Outboard powered boats do not have permenant engines. Outboards are not designed to leave in the water when not in use. What makes the installation permanent? How about a bolt through the transom? Wires hard wired to the battery? I would dare any one of those A$$holes to come find out how "EASY" the engine is to remove.

I am sure they have Marina rules and policy set in writing. It would be interesting to get a copy.

Are you sure you want to give this marina your money? Every marina I have been to charged by the foot, or by the length of the slip.

Solved the problemo! All I have to do is construct a 4 foot long bow sprit; absolutely necessary for flying a spinnaker.
Long Beach Downtown Marina used to allow boats under 30' LOA to lease 30' slips and charge for 30'. That was back when there was no waiting list of 30 foot LOA boats desiring the 30' slips. Now there's a big waiting list of 30's so they want to move out the under 30's. There's a small boat descrimination that's growing, mainly due to the fact that the "market" is perceived to be 30 feet and longer. Big boats rule, little boats: go buy a trailer.

Some background:
There are only two marinas in Long Beach, the Alamitos Bay Marina and the Downtown/Shoreline Marina. We live a few minutes from each of them. They are both in the process of reconstruction/rehabilitation so there's an understandable inefficiency in assigning/reassigning slips for the next couple of years. I/we prefer the convenience of being close to our boat. However, if we get jacked around anymore, the next nearest marina is Cabrillo in San Pedro, 10 miles from our home. It's a private marina and allows basically any size boat in its 30' slips but you pay for the 30, a couple bucks more per foot than the Long Beach marinas; about 50 bucks more per month: $308 vs. $358.

The choice of marinas would be clear to me. The closer you are to the boat the more you will use it.

How about.... A nice teak sprit with a mermaid hanging underneath....

Looks like a "reasonable" way to go. After people complain about the bossomed lasse, you could offer to take it off.
