I was rooting through La Tina Caliente today and half the wiring I could see was twisted together and let exposed. I would like to rip it all out and start over again. Cheers.
Re: "<i>Is there a sailboat wiring book for dumbies?</i>"
No thank goodness. If there were, it would only encourage them. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Actually, there are several very good books on boat wiring which start with the basics. Which is good, because as you've seen there are boats out there in desperate need of wiring repairs and upgrades. Two books I've found helpful are
"<b>Boat Owners Illustrated Handbook of Wiring</b>", by Charlie Wing
and
"<b>Sailboat Electrics Simplified</b>", by Don Casey.
Also "<b>The 12 Volt Bible</b>" or something like that.
(I think I got those right. They're at least close.)
It helps a whole lot if you're already comfortable working with electricity, using a VOM, have at least a passing familiararity with Ohm's Law, and making reliable connections.
The concept of an electrical energy budget is also key.
As for <i>"I would like to rip it all out and start over again."</i>
I admire your ambition and desire to do it right. I suggest you do plenty of reading and studying before getting too far into this project. That's what I did, and I can assure you it's a good feeling to know I have a reliable electrical system.
Hi Leon, One of the other hobbies I had while raising the kids was building tube amplifiers. I am very comfortable doing this and look forward to it. The guy installed $500.00 worth of marine stereo and hand twisted the power wire directly to the battery without fuse.....makes me crazy. Cheers.
Another helpful book is <i>Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual </i>by Nigel Calder although it focuses on larger boats with more complicated systems than our boats.
"....The guy installed $500.00 worth of marine stereo and hand twisted the power wire directly to the battery without fuse....."
That sounds like my older brother. he was alway installing stereos in my dads boats. The end result was alway my dad turning on the stereo, then after awhile, turning it down, forgetting it was on, before you know it, dead battery!!! I spent a many times paddling boats and hailing others for a tow.....
