Greetings all! Will be having my de-naming/re-naming ceremony next week, and one thing my wife and I want to do is get the new name placed on the stern (never had the old one).
Can any of you recommend the way to go on this one - ask the boatyard if there's someone who can paint it on? All-weather-type stickers? The more options, the better!
Thanks!

You can go to West Marine and get stickers. They show you what they will look like as far as color, size, font type. I am de-naming our boat this week. I am going to put the new name on the side because I have the motor on one side of the transome and will, by spring, have an attached swim ladder on the other side.
<font size="2"> <font face="Comic Sans MS"> Sticky back vinyl lettering is very common at any sign maker. If you don’t have a graphics program just try some fonts in your word processor till you find one you like. Then go to the boat, tape a piece of butcher paper on the stern and freehand the name on it till you get the right width. Then all you do is go to the sign maker with the font and the width, the height will take care of itself, and pick a color. Ask them to give you horizontal guide lines so you can line it up right. Tape the graphic in place before you remove the backing and use a light pencil to make some line up marks. Take a spray bottle of a watered down soap solution and spritz the area as you set the graphic, that will give you some leeway when setting it, and get a rubber squeegee to smooth the air bubbles out. A sign maker will have the exact same material for much less than a “boat graphics” company. There are only two suppliers of the vinyl one being 3M.
I went to a business called Fast Signs to have vinyl stick on registration numbers done. 25 bucks and took about five minutes to install. Shortly thereafter, a friend did his with the stick on letters and numbers from Home Depot and he had to buy so many sheets to get the number and letter combo he needed that he spent almost as much money as I did and mine looks far better and neater. When it comes time for naming, I'll do the same thing.
To get my wife into it, I told her that it is up to the wife to name the boat. Who knows what she will come up with, but I can live with anything. Cheers.

Now I just need to think up a good catchy name! Here is a link to a bazillion names, published by Boat US ... maybe reading them will give y'all some ideas: Boat names
'Hope that helps ... and be sure you do a denaming/renaming ceremony to keep the sea gods happy ... good luck!
I was very pleased with BoatUS who did the name for my last boat. By the way, my wife, who is very creative, came up with the name "IV US" because there are 4 of us in the family. We thought of naming the Catalina we bought in August, "IV US 2" but none of us really like it. My favorite name, but I am out voted, is Emotional Rescue. I once saw a beautiful sailboat with this name. The owner also flew the Rolling Stones "tongue flag" whenever he sailed.
Good luck and let us know the name you selected and the company that made it.
Polynesians believe that it is bad luck to name a boat after a woman. The New Zealand interisland ferry named "Wahine", which means "woman" in Maori, hit the rocks off Wellington in 1968 with 51 lives lost. Was it bad luck or bad judgement sailing in gale force winds?
