For anyone who might be interested, I just saw a 1986 Catalina 25 for sale on e-bay. It is a boat donated to a charity. High bid as of 1553 hours today, Tuesday, December 13th, 2005 is $1,100.00. Boat is located in Mamaroneck, NY. Auction ends December 16th.
Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The seller “Boatangelministries” is Very unorganized and you may not get what you bid on. I bought a Catalina 22 from them about a year ago and it was missing sails, motor, and a bunch of other stuff when I went to pick it up. All things that they had advertised as included. On top of that there was a $400 storage bill that hadn’t been paid! (Or mentioned) Unless you can go inspect the boat before you bid I wouldn’t bother. Just my 2 cents Gene
I purchased my '87 C25 from Boat Angel and it was precisely as advertised. Actually, better than advertised since they didn't mention that there was a like-new condition pop-top cover inside.
Boat Angel relies on the description given to them by the owner (they are in California, the boat could be anywhere in the country). That can create issues when the owner is a bit less than truthful in his description of a boat.
Also, many times these boats are sitting in the back of some boat yard. It is entirely plausible that someone who is aware that the boat has been donated to a charity would "borrow" some of the equipment or accessories thinking that the eventual owner would never know what was originally there. Okay, steal is the correct word.
Maybe I was just lucky but my Boat Angel purchase went smoothly and I got more boat than I expected at a really, really good price. By the way, I went straight to the "Buy-it-now" option rather than risk someone else outbidding me and I'm glad I did.
I don't work for Boat Angel, don't know anyone who does. Just thought I'd relay my positive experience with them.
Ebay does have a fraud division but it apparently won't do any help. I believe they have basically become too big of a company to care. Boatangel spends lots of money with ebay so it’s not like ebay is going to do more than a slap on the wrist. I filed a complaint and never heard a thing! They basically just misrepresent items and I’m sure this is in part to how they operate.(Unorganized!) I’m not trying to say don’t bid on their items, I would just make sure you observe the item with your own eyes before you do! Just to make sure you are getting what you bid on. At least they tell people about the $1100 storage they have to pay on this one. I also noticed they have sold this boat before auction # 4594335991. Gene
