I have C25 hull # 3155 built in 1982. I am growing concerned by the amount of corrosion on the keel bolts. This is a fixed fin keel. What is the experience of others with boats of this age. Has anyone lost a keel? Has anyone removed and/or replaced the keel bolts? How big a job might this be?
Cast iron keel or lead? If your bolts are corroded I'd assume iron. My bolts were all badly rusted, about the size of #2 pencils. The boat failed survey when I bought it. I had 6 new bolts added. Using a special drill press and carbide bits, new holes were bored in the keel alongside the old bolts. These were then threaded, and 6 new 3/4 inch stainless rods were screwed in. Lanolin was put in the holes first. Then nuts were tightened down. The old rusty bolts were treated with carbolic acid then coated in bitumen. This job was done in the water, cost $900 and was completed in 2 weeks.
Catalina Direct sells a do it yourself kit. Drilling the holes takes a LONG time, cast iron is HARD.
