The mainsail reefing line on my '01 snugs down the tack but not the clew. May I assume I have to secure the clew manually, or should the reefing line secure both the tack AND the clew when I pull it through the clutch? Gimme a "clue". Thanks.

One of the best reefing solutions is the single line reefing which allows the sail to come down and secure evenly. Here is the link to the single line reefing solution:

Question answered: the line was jammed. The reef line through the clutch secures both the tack and the clue. New boat, new learning curve.

I usually make that same mistake. I keep heaving and pulling and forcing something. Finally a quick look at what I'm doing and I find a fouled line. Last time I raised my mast I broke the flag halyard like that. Now it will just have to stay broke until the next time I lower the mast.
