Hi Everyone, I've just made an offer on a 2003 WB C250! I've been reading your forum and it helped me to make the decision to go with the C250 over Hunter, Macgregor. I'm going to be sea trialing the boat on Saturday. Does anyone know of any issues or problems that are common on the boat I should watch for? The boat has spent its entire life in the bay & the water ballast has always been kept full. Is this a problem?
Carolyn, Good choice, I do not have a problem with the ballast tank being full all the time, it should be full.. The weak point of the whole boat is the cable that lowers and raises the swing keel. It would be good to know if it has been upgraded. Are you considering a survey and an inventory if you get that far? Also think about the logistics of this boat, trailer? What will be pulling the boat/trailer if that's the case. Also you might consider changing out the water in the ballast tank if it has been there a long time. Please pay the $20.00 and join the forum if you have not done so. Money well spent.
Thanks for the heads up on the cable. The cable is all rope. Also, when I sea trialed the boat, the seas were heavy, even in the dock. I noticed a clanking of the CB when it was pulled up, but not when it was down. Is this just a normal noise, or is there some way to adjust it? The current owner puts a couple drops of bleach in the vent of the water ballast tank once a month to keep it from getting nasty. Is this ok? I will be sailing it 70 miles down thru Tampa Bay down the ICW to my dock, so I am not planning on taking the boat out of the water until it needs bottom painting next year. What problems could arise if I don't drain the WB until then, assuming it hasn't been out of the water since Sept 2003? And yes, I will be sending my money in to join tomorrow!
The keel cable replacement that comes from Catalina is a tan colored piece of rope that's tough as iron. If that's what you have, you're probably okay there. If there's any way possible, I would have the boat inspected by a pro. It's worth the money. You should also have it pulled out of the water and the bottom inspected. When I had my bottom job done, I found I had about a dozen gel blisters. They cost 20 to 40 bucks a piece to repair. If you get the boat, you'll love it. My wife and I migrated from Hobie Cats to our 250WB a year+ ago. We really like being able to spend the night on the boat.
Carolyn, If you have not yet signed a deal, the centerboard needs shimming [Bargaining point]. This is not unusual for a C250 WB. Also I think most every WB owner puts clorox or bleach in the ballast tank when refilling it, more than a few drops though. My C 250 centerboard had the klunks when it was in the up position two years ago and I reshimmed it when I pulled the boat out in the fall. You should read Arlyn Stewart's forum located on this C250 forum, it will get you more familiar with the boat and some nice mods.
I'd have the rigging looked over and adjusted before I set sail especially the top of the mast.It never hurts to be sure. Also fresh fuel. These things are critical especially if you get into weather. We have a 2003 and love it. Enjoy and welcome to the forum. Steve
