I had the smae experience with a new Tohatsu 8 HP electric start from the same company.
We took it to a local dealer. He was not to happy to service it, but I had also checked with him a few weeks ago and he had no motors available for months! Our problem was a missing fuse on top of the powerhead. Once insterted, it ran fine. They did not charge us for the service, and it was fixed in one day. The warranty was honored even though we did not have someone else do the inspection.
Since then, the motor has worked very well.

Hi Dan,

For what it's worth I shift all the time without spinning the prop. Your picture (verbal) of a person doing a headstand in the water in order to turn the prop is a giggler. I visualized using a boat hook to the same end. YIKES !!!!

Well then both of us must have been lucky. I certainly will avoid that type of shifting in the future, and hope the rest of the owners out there have seen this topic.

Does this mean the the engine is not "allowed" to to stall in gear. At some point, everyone will have to shift a non-running engine. Hmmmm. I am not going to worry too much about this.

Tom.

Check my latest post on this aggravating subject "Tohatsu 9.8...again!" Tohatsu claims the engine only tilts back in neutral but mine only tilts in forward. Anyone else?

Problem solved!
Chris talked me through the adjustment via cell phone. There's a sliding gizmo on the control rod that has to be slightly adjusted to allow a neutral tilt; a new adjustment on the current model with front shifter that is giving almost all new engine owners the same problem. He again offered to refund me half of the 85 bucks I paid to the rip off Andersson Marine in Marina del Rey here in L.A.
