Hi,

I'm looking for a motor suitable for an elderly couple's 1984 Catalina 25.

They are getting rid of their old Honda manual start for a new electric start motor.

The Mercury 9.9, 25" shaft, Big Foot, has caught my eye. For 2006 they hae incorporated the fwd/rev shifting in the tiller. This shifting location would make it a lot easier for my friends, if it works well.

Have any of you had any experience with this motor? Heard any pros or cons?

Thanks,

Mark Eichman

Give the Tohatsu 9.8 hp electric start consideration. Shifter is in front, she's very quiet, and VERY affordable: just over $1,900.00 from www.onlineoutboards.com Contact is Chris; superior customer service.

Don't know about the 2006 Mercury, but my 1995 Mercury has an integrated shifter/throttle tiller (rotate throttle one way for forward, the other for reverse) and, to me, it is thee BEST feature any outboard can have.

The Merc has a totaly different tilt setup. It works and is convenient. I would say go for it.

Agreed. Wish I still had my '87 Merc running. It was so easy, compared to the N/T. If I can get it fixed cheap enough I might consider......nah!

My Mercury is set up to engage the tilt lock only in reverse.

Thank you for all of the great tips and suggestions!

I'm kind of sold on the new merc big foot with the 25" shaft.
Do any of you know how this motor works with the Garhaurer bracket with the four springs? How much pull is required to get the motor to come up? Are there accurate specs available on exactly what position to mount the bracket? A friend bought a bracket other than Garhaurer and he had to add a 2" spacer between the transom and the bracket so that the motor would have enough room to tilt back. I haven't heard of this problem with the Garhaurer.

I am also interested in the installation requirements of the Merc Bigfoot, as I have a 2004 waiting to be installed on my 81 TR FK. It will be replacing an old Honda 10, so I am certain that the mount will have to be replaced first - to the four-spring?
