The previous owner of my 84 C25 informs me that the bolt that holds the swing keel cable to the winch may be installed wrong. I have looked at the parts manual for a clear picture of this area but have found none.
Can anyone explain how the bolt is attached, and if it is wrong will the operation of the keel be jeopardized?
I just replaced the cable in my boat, so maybe I can help ... I have an older boat (hull #68), and I suppose it's possible that Catalina changed things by the time your boat was manufactured.
Anyway, the attachment point on the spool isn't a bolt ... it is a clamp with two small lag bolts that bolt through the side of the spool. The cable exits through a hole in the side of the spool and goes under the clamp. Once you tighten the nuts on the lag bolts, the clamp holds the end of the cable securely in place.
I don't know for sure, but I doubt that you would have any trouble with your cable as long as it is secured to the spool ... the cable seems to be long enough so that you still have some extra on the spool even with the keel fully extended.
Thanks Buzz I can sleep tonight in preparation of splash down tommorrow

You might look at the new cable that Catalina Yachts now sells, as it is made to insure that it will not do damage to the swing keel trunk when winching it to the "up" position.
It is the other end that you really have to worry about!!
