I just bought a 2005 250WK. I was going to buy a new boat but my dealer offered to sell me his 2005 at a good price (he wants a WB). The boat has wheel steering and a 2006 9.8 Tohatsu xlong shaft/elec.start and front shifter. The dealer is about 65 miles from our home. We were going to sail the boat up the ICW today but 23-30 winds and cold temps made this impossible. I have been reading all the good info on this forum and mentioned to my dealer about adding the soft link and additional weight in the bow. He assured me that these mods were not necessary. It seems to me that alot of owners seem to think these changes improve the performance of the boat. If they are that important I would prefer to make the changes prior to making the 65 mile trek. I would appreciate any comments.
Hi TJA, Perhaps the dealer was more interested in closing the deal than entertaining any complications. Several knowledgable sailors on these pages have found the mods that you mention to be time tested and valuable. I'd go with their estimate.
On the other hand, probably neither of the mods you mention (or lack thereof) is make-or-break in getting your boat home. Some like the soft link, others find it unnecessary. Ditto for extra weight up front -- we've got 300 lbs up there, but other 250 owners do well without. Were it me, I'd sail/motor her home, sail her a few weeks, and see what she needs.
I agree with ATGEP and the dealer. The mods are not required to sail or motor the boat. I have yet to add any weight up front and I race the boat every Wednesday and have beaten quite a few larger boats, all be it in light winds. She has held her own in bigger blows with same size boats. The soft link I did add, but that is because of my tight docking situation. Sail her for awhile then decide what mods you would like to make. You may decide you don't need any. Enjoy your new boat and welcome to the forum and the association.
