I'm planning on dropping my swing keel in a couple of days to inspect it and prep it for the season. I'm planning to use a method of lowering the keel that I found through this web site which includes replacing the bolts with long threaded rods.
Does anyone know the standard size of the bolts holding the swing keel? The boat is far enough away that I don't want to make the trip just to check.
It's a 3/8" bolt-pretty sure it's 1-1/4" long.I used 316 stainless with a lock washer then coated with 3M 4200 to keep the water away from the threads. As an option the keel can be lowered and replaced pretty easy with a good sized floor jack on a concrete slab and I would guess a lot quicker than the all thread method.Good luck.
It's pretty easy to block up the keel in a horizontal position and lower it slowly with the house jack; this does away with the need for threaded rods, which I used the first time. I replaced the pin, bushing blocks, bolts, cable and cable holder all at once; let us know if you have questions. Stephen Z sailing "Little Wing"
