Strictly Sail in Chicago is a week from this Friday at Navy Pier.

Anybody on here planning to attend?

I don't understand a sailboat show in Chicago in January. What's up with that? Wouldn't it make more sense in July or August when you could actually sail?

McCormick is inside, sailors are dying to kick fiberglass.

Dang, I'd be there if I had to walk on the ice! A sailboat show makes sense just about any time of year.

Steve - The people in Chicago are about jonesing to get their hands on anything at this point. Cleveland has the biggest indoor boat show (not a strictly sail show) in January every year - by the time it rolls around, so many sailor and boaters are dying to even dream about getting on the water. its the best time of year. All the other times people are sailing and don't have time for a show - plus their wallets are busy tending to what they already own.

I'm thinking about going, now that I know it's going to be indoors.

Okay, here's a dumb question...are they displayed with the masts up? Sorry, I'm just familiar with sailboat shows that have in-the-water sailboats. I can understand an indoor one but it still seems to me that the "big one" - Strictly Sail - would be when they can give demos and show their boats off in the water. Seems that there would be a whole lot of climbing stairs at an indoor sailboat show.

Do they hold the ice fishing specialties show in June up there?

If you go to the Strictly Sail show, Don't go to McCormack Place! It is at Navy Pier, and some do have their masts up. See you there.

Think going to a boat show in Chicago in Jan. is frustrating?
At least there you're just looking. I bought my boat this December and have to console myself with sanding/refinishing the teak, wondering how to rig the sails, and getting the list of priorities ready.
On top of everything it is so far back at the boatyard that it'll probably be May before they launch it. Why do we torture ourselves so??

A friend of mine went last year and had a great time. I wish I were going.

The Detroit Boat Show is next month, but I haven't attended in years, because they haven't had any sailboats, just powerboats. Ah, but what can you expect in a place nicknamed the "Motor" City.

This year might be different...From their website.

THE SAIL BOATS ARE BACK!

After a long hiatus, the Detroit Boat Show is pleased to be showing four exceptional sailboats for 2006 boating season. A Beneteau 343 and 323; a new model EdgeWater 228 and a 17 foot Hunter.

Four whole sailboats?...yippee!

Depends on th building Steve. At the Cleveland International Exposition Center (an old WWII tank plant) boats up to about 22 feet have the masts up. Bigger boats go either without, or have what they call "display masts" which are hacked off. The stays get in the way when you have that many people trapsing across all the boats anyway.

No doubt it's incredibly smart (& profitable) to hold an indoor boat show in January in the northern latitudes. At this moment a bitter wind from the fetches of Manitoba is hitting dissonant notes up under the eaves. Our horses, nervous because of the wind, are running in the icy pasture, and when I go to bed in a few minutes it'll be to peruse a shedding copy of Cruising World and a chapter of Don Quixote (the two are clearly related). Canny retailers of sailing gear understand this and take advantage of it. They are in the singular position along with crack dealers of naming their price to the pathetically grateful.

Strangely, we don't mind. Chicago's on my calendar.

I'm looking forward to attending Strictly Sail Pacific in April. Living in the valley of the beautiful Rogue River means the only boats I can peruse close to home are river drift boats, or a huge array of Bayliners Heck I have to drive 5 -8 hours to get to a West Marine to handle turnbuckles and shackles. Not that this is a bad thing for the checkbook, but it means that at least six months are spent pineing away for a sailing fix. So January boat shows make all the sense in the world to me too. It's okay Steve, I'm sure if I was surrounded by sunshine and warmth like you I'd be a little slow on the uptake too

Steve Madden, last year there were quite a few with masts up. I do not have a good memory but i think most up to around 30' had masts up. There were even some larger boats with cut off masts 10' or so above the boom just so you could get the feel of where that boom was.

Steve Milby if you go on Saturday & I run into you you better have some pictures in/out of that C&C (CW II). Hope to see ya there.

Yep, show is at Navy Pier and the masts are up on every single boat if I can remember correctly. Show is very nice. We will be there on Saturday. The show runs next weekend.

I'll be running around in my USF Basketball sweatshirt. Say hey, if you see us.

Maybe that's where my dismay at holding a sailboat show in January came from. When you say a boat show is going to be held at a pier, I naturally picture boats tied up in the water at a pier. Didn't know Navy Pier was a big building.

Now I understand.
