If you don’t have the space and don’t want to find out if temperature can be an issue, check with your local sail loft. Most provide winter storage free of charge and will make any minor repairs at a reasonable rate….compared to the rate they charge when its April and you want to go sailing the next day.
Cold is fine, be sure the location is good and dry. While damp is not as bad as sunlight, it might support the growth of mildew which will leave unsightly blotches on your sails.
I have quite a few sails hung from the rafters of my boat barn. They stay rolled up in their sail bags hanging from hooks. Hanging makes them a hard place for rodents to get to preventing another storage issue. little furries love to nest in the folds of any fabric. I had to replace a bimini cover that had been parked for the winter too close to a wall in the barn and had been chewed up by nesting mice.
this is a nice building don't get me wrong, not a barn barn but an insulated building with a wood stove and plenty of space to work on the boats I restore as a hobby.
