Sunday was a wonderful experience.. The GPS showed that I was moving steadily along at 10.2 kts on a beam/broad reach and hardly healing!! How's that you say? Sunday was the biggest/fastest ebb tide of the year (2006 that is) at 5.9 kts. I was heading into SF Bay under the Bay Bridge, coming along the SF City waterfront, where the tide is often even stronger than under the GG Bridge. What a ride!!! The folks trying to come back in the bay under the GG Bridge were probably sailing backwards, even though winds were predicted to be 15-25kts (but probably didn't get that high). If it wasn't for the misty rain it would've been perfect.
What was even better though was when I passed a C34 :) This was part of the 'Three Bridge Fiasco' Single-handed Race. We were on the east side of Yerba Buena Island (which anchors the middle of the Oakland-SF Bay Bridge), heading south under the east span of the bridge. The C34 got caught too low in the lee of the island and had to tack too much to get through the gap under the Bridge. I saw what happened to him so I pinched and clawed my way up high with every gust to stay as high as I could. What fun it was to pass him :) Of course as soon as he was through and we were back into the wind again he passed me by but I had my moment!!

Great story Bill!I wish more people would share their cruising/racing stories. I'm in Rio Vista and getting closer to sailing the Bay.I gather all the info I can about sailing there so your post will go into that binder-thanks.I've done the sailing backward thing on the Sac. River in light winds and a strong current-strange!
For those who are not familiar with the Bay Area, here's a link to a web cam looking SE towards San Francisco, across the main part of the bay. The Bay Bridge is in the background, and Yerba Buena Island is just off the view of the camera to the left. (what I described was when I was coming under the bridge towards the camera).
Thanks Craig/Lorri.. Certainly anyone who sails in an area with a broad tidal range has to be very aware of the tides and the tidal currents. I doubt that any of us would want to be swept out through the gate on an ebb tide! That place is a funnel and can get crazy.
Hey Bill, I brought Sparky back to Brisbane the Friday before from SF Boat works (just south of the ballpark). Had a 5.4 ebb against me and was making .8 to 1 knot first mile or so until the ebb got somewhat blocked by Hunters Point and began to slack up a bit. Took 2-1/2 hours! About 5 miles. But, the bottom is nice and slick now and ready for the racing.
Hey Jim and Paul Now that the weather is getting better and the wind is picking up we will need to arrange another meeting! "Phredde" said he was interested in meeting up with us too.
June 3 is another SSS race, the 'In the Bay' race, if you are interested. See http://www.sfbaysss.org/ (of course now that 'Sparky' has a clean bottom we will be at a severe disadvantage :))
Or we can arrange another lunch meeting someplace..
