BARRY COOPER INITIALLY POSTED THIS WITH A TITLE ADDRESSED TO ME - POSSIBLY SOME OF YOU HAVEN'T REPLIED BECAUSE OF THAT SO i AM MOVING IT TO ITS OWN POST.

Thank you so much for thinking of me!!! I found a swing keel in California for $200 and my sister's trucking company is going to ship it for free. I have a white sail. Can I successfully use red dye to turn it red?

The only other two replies follow
This is from Al

Why???????

I don't think the dye will hold but, check with a sail loft.

WHOA nellie
what kind of sail is it? If its a spinnaker, no, if its a jib or main maybe, but WHY?

Your new playground involves water, water and dye involves running, staining and spotting. Dye can also mess with the fabric and weaken it. Since your going to be around water and your deck is white, I wouldn't do it.

Beyond that, when you are heading downwind and you get a major windshift, sailors don't say I put up my red sail. They say - it was blowing like stink and we caught a crazy shift that clocked 180degrees. We were forced to go white sail and beat to the finish.

so the answer is I wouldn't.
(added in second post: and beside that it might wind up Pink)

I have always thought it would be extreamly cool to tye dye an old set of sails.
seems to me that the cloth is too stiff and the slick coating would prevent color from entering. Perhaps, dying a bit of regular cloth and sew it on like a patch.

I have a multicolored dyed dacron sail but the dyeing process was done when the Bainbridge cloth was manufactured before the fill was added.

I don't think a finished sail can be successfully dyed.
