I reupholstered my cushions and added two new ones. I used Cadet Grey Sunbrella, man that stuff is stiff when it is new, anyone know what will happen if I throw them in the wash? The new ones are short back rests to open up the depth of the settees a little. It allowed me to move the starboard settee back to the quarterberth to add an insulation layer, (I sleep in the quarterberth and hugging that bare hull is cold). I forgot to tell the upholsterer to add buttons to the new cushions, I think I need to have him do it, what do you think? Here is the port settee with the original cushion.
If you used Sunbrella's exterior canvas, it'll probably be a little stiff for the duration, just based on how it's woven, but it should last longer than you. I used their upholstery fabric, which is quite a bit softer. (I won't outlive that, either.)
What did you use on the sides of the quarterberth? I like that teak look!
Frank, Your interior looks great. I just got the news (bill) that my new upholstery is done. My original back cushions had buttons and I insisted that the new ones have them too. I am glad to see your photo’s, it reinforces my decision to have the buttons put on the back cushions. I will post photos when I get the new cushions installed on the boat. BTW - I used Sunbrella upholstery fabric “Sapphire blue” with matching “piping”. You’re contrasting “piping” looks good. Yes “piping is the correct term.
Go ahead and click on the bird.
Hmmm... where do you keep all the stuff that (I think) inhabits the quarterberth on most of our boats. On my boat the QB holds bags of sails, extra lifejackets, toolbox, deck brush, extra line, rigging box, utility bucket, etc. It's so damp up here in the PNW that anything you put in the dumpster will be consumed by mold.
BritonUSA, I put that book on board for when I was bored and have never opened it. I was a Heinlein and Asimov reader as a boy but am truly one of the most illiterate people you will ever know. I have three college degrees, a barbering diploma, (yes I am a registered barber), well over 300 hours of college and cannot carry on an intelligent conversation about any famous book or author.
Dave, I bought the fabric to make a boat cover and decided to use it inside, probably an error but it made the project affordable. I am going to take a swatch and wash it to see if I can get some sizing out.
JG, I used the white piping to pull the white warp out from the grey woof, up close it does lighten up the grey quite a bit. I brook a personal credo and was not there for the work, had I been I would have the piping at the top and the buttons, now I need to take them back.
Clam, I have two large dock boxes. My sail locker is empty except for vests on the shelf because of my air conditioner. My quarter berth has my Thermo-pedic bed there 24-7. My v-berth has linens and my wife's bed roll under it. I never have things "around" the boat. I do have a utility hammock with towels and such neatly folded in it on the starboard side of the v-berth. My tool bags are under the starboard settee with the table. The brass sign says, "Captain's Quarters", kinda dorky but hey!
Wow! That is one nice interior Frank. The cushions look great and sure do add to the look. My cushions are in very good shape, but being a light grey and without the buttons, they look a lot more plain.
Dave, sorry, I used 1/2" teak ply, it is the bulkhead from the quarter berth/sail locker. I put new bulkheads there to accommodate the air conditioners on both of my 25s.
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing your projects once again. It's contributors like you that make our association dues worth every penny and then some(hint, hint, you lurkers).
I'm taking a beginning sewing class to learn some skills to redo my interior also. How many boat units did those cushions take?
Nicely done! I went out today looking at fabric to recover my cushions. How many yards did you use? Did you also cover the quarter berth cushions? Did you cover the bottoms of the settee cushions with vinyl?
Does anyone know the source for the fabric that Catalina uses for their cushions?
By the way, I will not be doing the work myself. Maine has a medium security prison about 20 miles from where I live and they have an upholstery program and do boat cushions. Don't know the cost yet, but had our couch and chair recovered a couple of years ago and it was very reasonable.
I have mixed feelings about the cost, I supplied the material, (I paid $150 for 15 yards of 60"wide) and they reused my vinyl backs and foam. They did create two additional cushions, foam and all. It was $800. I probably have 5 yards of material left.
Nice looking cushions, Frank. Not bad for a one handed sailor! How's the hand recovering? Apparently it's doing great. I've got my old cushion material at Catalina Yachts for replacement. I didn't realize that they also replace the foam cushions, so I'll be offering my old foam, which is in great shape, on this forum and the for sale forum when my new ones arrive. Then I'll have shipping cartons to use. If I had the time I would have tried to do it myself but then I want everything to fit right, like yours. I'm with Clambake on his comment. How do you keep such a tidy, neat looking cabin? Where do you keep your boathooks, dingy and motor, deck cleaning brushes, supplies, etc?

quote:
What's on the brass plaque in the quarterberth?

quote:
Frank, FYI...when you wash them...they will shrink.

I washed a piece but did not measure it first, if it shrank it did it very evenly, it did get very soft.
Yep Frank, that looks much better. I also like the curtain instead of that ugly accordian thing I have hanging in my boat. I will surly rip it out and do what you did. Cheers.
Frank Seeing your new cushions and the nice interior makes me want to brush off the snow, climb under the tarp, plug in the space heater and pop a top (on a drink, not the cabin) and daydream about voyages gone by! Nice pics!
Dennis, the curtain is a nice silky shower curtain, I tripled it and stitched it at the top and bottom. I use three large cup hooks and two grommets on the curtain set up. One cup hook at the mast post, one a couple of inches from the edge of the doorway, (see the grommet in the photo), and one an equal distance from the center hook on the port bulkhead. That way the curtain spends most of the time hooked in the open position, but the ladies can rehook the end of the curtain on the doorway hook to close the curtain. Curtain rods steal headroom in the doorway. Jim, I really enjoy my boats when they are here at home, it was in the twenties yesterday when I did all the electrical stuff and my Caframo heater had me working in shirtsleeves. Captain Bill, thank you for asking about my hand; the splint came off last week and my wrist was sprained from the splint and my hand was so swollen the skin looked like it was going to explode. I even fell climbing out of my companionway the other day because I could not put my hand down when my street shoes slipped on the companionway stairs; that gave me some new bruises and a large strawberry on my right shin. Today was a big day for my hand, I have gotten all of the knuckles to break free; most have been locked from the swelling and being in a fist for so long in the splint. I think I will have full mobility in a week and will start rebuilding my muscle tone. Our racing season starts in around 75 days and I am the grinder.
Frank, glad to hear your hand is doing so well. You'll be fully recovered for the season. I keep looking at your pictures and am amazed at all you have done for your boat. That's a great expanple for all of us to follow and so informative. Keep the pictures comming and watch out for the strawberries!
