I am trying to set up a beaching rudder for my 250. My question is how did Catalina attach the tiller to the beaching rudder? Did they just use two straps and if so how thick are they? Did Catalina use a different tiller on the beaching rudder or did they just shim the 1 ½” standard tiller to make it 2” wide so it will fit the beaching rudder head which is 2” wide?

Keith,
I used the tiller bracket that came with the boat. It required drilling holes and attaching a cam cleat to the top of the bracket.
Sorry I have no pix.

Keith, Not sure this is your deal or not... Catalina upgraded from generation I to generation II rudder sometime during '96. The generation II rudder head was thicker and required shims to be added at the bolting locations for the tiller straps.

Arlyn what I have is a second generation non beaching rudder which has a u shaped bracket over the tiller and fits over the top of the rudder head which is 1 ½” wide. What I am trying to find out is how Catalina attached the tiller to a second generation beaching rudder which is 2” wide. There is a cleat at the top of the rudder head for holding it in an upright position, there for there couldn’t be a u shaped strap over the rudder. There may or may not be a u shaped part over the tiller. The options are 1) Catalina may have shipped a 2” wide tiller with the beaching rudder or 2) they may have just shimmed the tiller out the extra ½” to make it the same width as the rudder head. They may have used 2 straight straps to attach them together or there may be a u section over the tiller but not the rudder.

That is how they did it. To make up the thickness difference they used plastic shims on each side of the tiller.

I am going to by pass the shims. Today I stopped by H&L woodworking (who makes the tillers for Catalina) and went through their pile of tillers. I found one which is 2” wide (the same width as the beaching rudder) and has the same rise, so I picked it up for the beaching rudder. Now for attaching it. Did Catalina just use two straps bolted to the tiller or were they attached like the picture above in a u shape?
