Hi everyone,

I'm planning to get my new boat into the water this weekend; however, I have found that the Raymarine speed transducer was not mounted. So I need to find out which direction do the arrows on the transducer face, forward or aft. Do I need to apply teflon tape to the threads or is the "O" ring good enough alone.

Has any one had any leaks aroung these through hulls. The factory installed the through hulls but not the transducer (I guess they forgot).

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,

Although I have a SR knotmeter, I believe all knotmeters are designed to be pulled while the boat is in the water. The reason for this is so the transducer can be cleaned regularly. Also, the transducer should be removed and the plug installed while hauling or launching the boat to prevent damage to the paddlewheel by the travel lift straps, bunks, and or rollers of the trailer.

I poked around the Raymarine website, but couldn't find a manual for the transducer, only the instruments (which said xducer instructions are packed with the xducer...).

I would *guess* that the arrow points forward, and the o-ring does the sealing, not the threads, so, no teflon tape.

But however you do it, keep an eye on it...

My boat came from the factory this way as well, and the reason I was given was to keep the speed transducer safe during trailering (not sticking out of the hull) as was previously described.

I can tell you for sure that the arrow points forward, that there is a "detent" that the transducer goes into when it is straight forward, and that you need only screw it in, no teflon tape is required. Additionally, I was advised not to screw it in too tightly, don't get too enthusiastic and reef on it, as stripping the plastic thread would be a bad thing (as Martha would say).

I am told that you can take it out when the boat is in the water, and use the plug that came with it (what the factory installed) to keep the water out of the boat while you clean it, etc. (Do it quickly.) That sounds wet to me...have not tried it. Will have to when I take the boat out of the water next, as you want to have the transducer stowed before you put the boat on the trailer, according to other C250 owners I have talked to.

Kevin...I remember the first time I removed my knotmeter while the boat was in the water. I pictured a scene straight out of a 3 Stooges short with water shooting up to my face. In actuality, the process was very anticlimactic in that only a few tablespoons of water came inside.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'll try changing the transducer and plug with the boat on the ramp that way if anthing goes wrong I can just haul it out. If it works how you describe then I change it in the slip.

Thanks

Bruce
