I could use a little advice from the fiberglass experts out there. I upgraded to a 3rd gen rudder in March of 03, I sent the rudder back to catalina and they repaired the cracking between the pintails in May of 04, this summer the rudder cracked again, just as bad all the way from pintail to pintail. I'm thinking about trying a repair myself. I should mention that when the problem first occured, I tried to open the crack and use Marine-tex to fill the void. That only worked a short time until it also cracked. I'm suspect that I should grind the surface down and build it back up using glass cloth and either epoxy or polyester resin, probably followed with either paint or jell- coat. The crack appears to be deep, not just superficial, and is fairly open. Any thaughts before I proceed would be appreciated.
Bill, My suggestion would be to send a fax to Frank Butler (owner of Catalina) in Woodland Hills,ca.I've had similar experiences, and he really gets on it.I'd follow up on it about a day after (toll free line) and talk directly with him. They have a pickup service at their dealers. Steve
My third generation rudder is also in CA for its second fix. Same deal. A long crack in the same place as the first one was - down the leading edge between attachment points. I contacted Catalina. Frank Butler sent me a letter saying they would fix it, if I shipped it to them for repair. I shipped it out on 11/30/2005. It cost me about $50 UPS.
They said they would repair the rudder and ship it back to the closest dealer. I'm still waiting. Fortunately, I don't need it just yet. It's been 20 degrees, and last weekend we got 18" of snow.
You might as well give them a second chance to make it right. It appears to be a manufacturer's defect. I'm hoping the second fix results in a permanent repair. I'm losing patience, but willing to give anyone a second chance.
