Bill Holcomb lists the theoretical hull speed as 6.31 kts. in an article in "Tech Tips." Actual speed can exceed that number under the right circumstances, but anytime you can hold a C-25 at around 6 kts under sail, you're moving right along.
I see you finaly got your first post in response to the hull speed question. Im surprised they didn't come sooner. We all love to strech the truth about how fast our boats are. Here is a site you can go to and it will give you the aprox. speed for any hull length and a few links about hulls. try this www.anyboat.com/hull.htm
Thanks, guys! I've been reading up on sail trim and wind theory with the idea of attaining the "groove". It helps that I just got a new speed log so I can see how fast I'm going, or not, and make all kinds of adjustments.
Kathleen - remember that theoretical hull speed only applies when you are going to weather. Off the wind in a stiff breeze you can exceed it with relative ease. (I once had a C22 over 10 knots on a beam reach - and the speed was checked with 2 knotmeters!) Derek on "This Side Up"
Douglas - I'd swear to that 10 knots in a court of law - and bring the skipper of the O'Day who was to lee of me! He had the other knotmeter...which had been calibrated that week. Derek
Getting beyond hull speed only requires enough power (including the force of gravity when surfing on a wave) to lift the boat far enough out of the water to overcome the bow wave. If the boat won't lift as you try to exceed hull speed, the harder you push it, the harder the bow wave will push back. A C-22 has a better chance of getting up on plane than a C-25 because of the hull form--broader and flatter toward the stern. But the 25 can surf a little--we did 7.8 downwind under bare poles during our 100 mile delivery trip after buying Passage. The most remarkable thing there is that I'm still married!

Bristle - The best hour of sailing I ever had was on a spinnaker run with 15+ MPH winds. We were reached 11.5 with 3-4 foot waves. A real rush to say the least. My C25T is a wing keel so she is much faster off wind.
Not so secretly Im sitting here reading these posts about boat speed. I could jab you guys a little more but have you ever heard the saying the first liar doesn't stand a chance. Just having some fun with you all. Once I shot through Deception pass on a full 9knt max ebb. At full throttle and all sails up I was just able to tow three water skiers. LOLPMP

Doug, I was on that SAME max ebb, but my boat was slowed down when all the seagulls decided to hitch a ride 'cause I was going faster than they were!
I'm right here with you Al on the speed of our Tall/Wing boats. They ARE faster!!! Maybe we need to mount an America's Cup challenge.... I think I'm going to haul my C25 and start polishing the hull tomorrow
