I'm the first to admit that I'm really computer stupid. How come some of our threads fit nicely onto the computer screen, and some are so wide that they don't fit onto the screen? Then you have to scroll left and right to read them? Most messages fit onto the screen and are easily read. Some seem to be twice as wide as the screen.
As near as I can tell, the two most frequent reasons for a thread suddenly getting wider than the browser window (even if it fit OK a few posts ago) are:
1.) Mile-long URL links pasted in literally without taking advantage of the forum's built in option of giving such links a short, self-explainitory, word-wrappable alternative name, and
2.) Directly inserting huge images without either doing the above (providing a link to the photo consisting of a short description of the image), or not posting a small thumbnail version of the larger image which the reader has the option of clicking on in order to see the full size picture if they so desire. Posting thumbnail or text links to large images would also allow such threads to load significantly faster when openned in a browser.
The new forum page layout with the ever-present menu on the left, will tend to make these widdened threads even more noticable.
Ditto Frank.I would have liked to read the thread on 'Gelcoat Repair' on the C25 forum but every time I had to scroll sideways I'd lose my place.I wish there was a 'fit to screen button'.
I fixed the Forum post for GelCoat. Normally we do not edit members posts or delete them unless it is in bad taste. However since we are in the final phases of finishing the forum and that is one of the issues, I found it suitable. No content was changed.
It does look like people need to post links using the alias - just set your options to prompt on your posting and click on the insert URL.
The link I inserted for the 3M product was the culprit in the horizontal scrolling in the Gelcoat repair thread. I removed the link so that won't be a problem now. I was not able to find a way to insert the link in the manner that Leon mentioned. I'll put the link back when I figure out the method.
OK, got it sorted out, link is there without the obnoxious scrolling.

Arlyn, my browser settings are set to check the page on every visit. Regardless, it's fixed and now I know how to correctly insert long links. In my opinion, those directions should be in the same place as the directions for posting a picture, as well as in the FAQ.
"prompt" is a poor term, it is not self explanatory at all. Some snitz forums simply lock in that mode and it is the only way you can post. I like to see a simple URL in a post, it helps me form a mental picture of where the link is going, I feel the click here device is dumbing the post down. However, if the link is to some ridiculous URL or to a transient page then it works great.
Frank, if you hover over the URL it should identify itself in the left hand corner of your browser if you have the status bar on. If your using explorer for sure, if your using some other brand, I'm sure they have the same functionality.
