Yes folks, I'm in a rut. Once again I'm taking my yearly three week trip to the Keys and will trailer my boat down there. Another member of Fleet 89, Dwight, isn't taking his this year, but will fly down for a few days of sailing. Gas prices will certainly bit me in the wallet. Are there any more Catalina 25 owners still living in the Keys out there. (I remember someone selling their 89 a few months back) I'll base out of La Siesta Marina on Islamorada. This is the friendliest, most laid back marina I have ever been too. All they have is a ramp, showers, and very nice folks who run the place, and very nice people tie up there. Only room for about 10 to 15 boats. Fortunately it wasn't torn up in Hurricane Wilma. The water rose to within one inch of the electrical outlets, and then receeded. The tiki huts are intact too.
With the weather this weekend, some time cruising in the Keys sounds great! I am new to the list and have just bought a 1988 wing keel C25. The boat does not have a trailer, but I am looking for one. I used to live in FL and have spent some time cruising in that area in other boats I have owned. Now I live in SC, and one of the reasons I bought the C25 is so that I can trailer it back down to FL.
I am interested in meeting up with others who may want to cruise down there. Is it difficult to do, and is the forum the best way to find out if there is a cruise or rendez-vous for C25 owners? Also, can you give me any suggestions regarding trailering [especially in FL and the Keys] and what model or brand of trailers I should look at? This is the first time I have owned a trailerable boat.
By the way, if I can be of any help regarding what little I know of the Keys, please let me know.
Hi Mike, Welcome to the group. I bought my trailer from Fastload trailers out of Plant City, Florida. I don't recommend them at all. They used good components, but their execution was really bad. Dwight just bought a trailer for his 89 wing from Trail n Sail. They are out of a small city near Asheville. He bought one with a capacity just at the weight of the boat, and I noticed his axles bending when we retrieved his boat. My trailer has a capacity of 9600 lbs, and is rock solid going down the road. You definitely want to get one with an extendable tongue too. The biggest problem in trailering to the Keys is finding a good ramp, and then having a place to park/store your truck and trailer while out cruising. The best ramp is Pennekamp park. You can only park your rig there overnight if you are paying for a mooring, a slip, or a campsite. South Florida is a high crime area so you want a good safe place for your rig.
It is a joke. All of us with 88/89 wings are members, Frank is our Captain. The trouble is, we will not allow just any Catalina 25 in so we really can't become official. Hey Frank, spill a little beer for King Neptune for me.
I hope I am not sending multiple messages to the forum. I seem to have had some problem signing on [ my error].
Thanks for your reply on trailers and trailering. I hope to be able to travel and sail by spring, hopefully in time to use some of the children's spring break. If we can't make it to FL, I hope we can cruise some of the ACE Basin between Charleson and Hilton Head. IMHO it is one of if not the prettiest section of the ICW.
While I now have a wing, I am more of a Parrothead and not a bird of prey.
I'm heading out to the Keys this Saturday. Weather channel website shows highs in upper 70's lows in 60's at night. winds 10 to 15. Life is good.
Hard work does have some rewards.
Of course when I win tonights 300 million powerball I'll just head to the Miami boat show and say, "give me one of those, and one of those" and that's just the babes at the show
Can you just imagine going to the show and buying whatever you wanted, and pay cash. for the boat I mean.
Since I'm the self appointed Grand Poobah of fleet 89, it is fleet 89. Actually three of my friends have bought 89 wings after checking out mine, so I could actually start a fleet. But I'm more comfortable running a pirate group matey. Har har har
