I had my c250 painted last year, think they covered ablative type with Interlux fiberglas bottomkote "hard" paint. When I took the boat out it was fine. Over the winter the bottom is chipping and pealing every where. Is this what would be expected when this sequence of paints are used.
Bottom painting is one of those unpleasant events that leaves you with no one to blame but yourself regardless of who puts the paint on. As owners we have to know what was on it and what should go on it and what preparation is needed and communicate that to whoever executes the plan. If you did that then make the people who failed eat the job, if you did not do that then you eat the job. Regardless it sounds like you should now take it down to fiberglass, start over and make sure things go well from now on. Tough response on a new poster's question but it is the bottom line.
Sadly, I must agree with Frank H. Any non-ablative paint over ablative won't work. Once it's thoroughly soaked, the ablative gets too soft and slimy for anyting else to stick to it. The bristol solution, and about the only option you've got, is to carefully take it down to bare fiberglass and start over. Feel free to ask us here about bottom paint recomendations.
Yup--the point of ablative paint is that it gradually wears away--just try running your finger over it (and then wash your hand). Hard paint can't possibly last long on it. I hate to raise a potential sore point, but in this day and age, who came up with the idea of using Fiberglass Bottomkote? Did the yard select or recommend it?? They could certainly tell you had ablative on there... You might be due some help stripping the Bottomkote off.
The Sailing center recommended the bottom be re-painted before I took the boat from the yard and they selected the paint. I remember asking why the original paint rubbed off so easy and they offered me the same explanation about the paint wearing off over time. I still have to talk with the owner of the yard so we'll see. Thanks for your input.
PS I have been reading the forum for over a year now and really enjoy it! I get a lot of info.
