One of this weekend's many projects is to install a new kick-up rudder. To those who have one, I would like to ask how you trailer with it. Do you raise it and pin it, or remove the bottom half and stow it? I tried searching the archives but didn't come up with anything.
I am also going to install a masthead antenna this weekend. Anyone have hints or tips for running the cable down the mast? Thanks.
Charlie, do a search on the forum for 'Installing fixed VHF, masthead antenna'
When we installed the vhf antenna at the masthead, we did it while the mast was horizontal. That took some work. Took the masthead off. Drilled the hole for the wire to exit the mast, large enough for a grommet. Tied a piece of very light line to the coax so that there was something to grab at the bottom of the mast.
Pushed the cable into the inner tube which can just be reached from the mast head. The coax was stiff enough to snake itself to the foot of the mast. Then poked around with a coat hanger hook to snag the light line and retreived the cable out through the grommet hole.
I purchased an angle bracket to attach to the stbd side of the masthead. It was offset enough to ensure that the antenna did not interfere with the Raymarine ST40 wind vane thingy (the one with the offset cups)
Drilled hole below mast head for coax exit at top of mast, grommet in hole.
I have an Ida Kick-Up but I don't normally trailer the boat. If I did I would at least take the bottom half off if you are going any distance. It's easy to do.
