I am about to buy a 1986 Catalina 25 and was wondering if the Catalina decks are constructed from solid fiberglass or fiberglass over balsa wood and if this is really a major consideration or not. Thanks.
86 is a nice year. I beleive that what is cored is plywood not balsa. There are occational stories about soft spots, mostly at the mast step but the Catalina 25 is not known for soft spots and delamination as many old boats are. You will get better info later this evening from others.
The deck is fiberglass over marine plywood. Walk on the deck, if it crackles like rice crispys its bad. Tap with the handle of a screwdriver around the mast plate, stanchions, and fittings. If it rings, its good, delaminated spots will have a mushy, dead, sound. Catalina's are not know for deck problems or for hull / deck joint problems. Leaky windows, that's another story (fairly easily remedied). A few dead sounds here and there is not a problem. Mushy under the mast, forget that boat.
