I'm very happy with my new cockpit cushions. I got quotes for $550, $500, and $300 for lawn chair ones, but igloo makes a cushion for the top of their coolers.
$35/$40.
Ok, so they're only 1/2 the length of the cockpit, but at $40.
There have been discussions surrounding using alternative cushions for the cockpit area, and this solution seems to be a viable one. The only note of caution would be to ensure they are somehow tethered/fastened to the seats, as the wind has a tendency to lift them up and blow them away if someone is not sitting on them!!
I use those flat PFD cushions. You can sit on 'em or use them as a backrest. I have four of them so usually everyone can have at least one. My favorite position on the run home is to sit on one and lean against another in the rear of the cockpit and kick back with my legs up :) ... plus they are USCG approved Type IV PFD (throwable device).
I bought one of those closed-cell foam pool mattresses at Sam's Club for about $40 and split it lengthwise. Made two nearly full-length cushions. Even has a little pillow molded in for the occasional siesta.
Hi Eric, did you have to do anything to the exposed edge. My first thought was to paint it with that stuff you dip tool handles in. It seems like the same stuff that is on the matress. CHeers.
West Marine sells a Foam Cockpit Cushion by Sopac. They are closed-cell. Two sizes: medium (38 3/4" x 12 3/4" x 1 1/4") for $29.99 and large (52" x 12 3/4" x 1 1/4") for $38.99.
Hamilton Marine, here in Maine sells, what appears to be the same cushions. Price: medium - $25.99; large - $31.99.
ERIC that is an awesome idea, I have never thought of that. i actually have cockpit cushions but I have that "it blew awat" problem. I bet thosed pool mattress pads are a bit heavier and probably look killer if they are in white
