This came up among the crew during Cabrillo 4. Is it legal to use the autopilot in an offshore race?

RRS 52 dot something +/- 3 says everything has to be done by manual power. I know for a fact that the folks in the around the world alone race aren’t holding the tiller for 15 days straight – it near physically impossible.

Rule 52 is not specifically listed as a rule that cannot be changed in the sailing instructions or notice of race. Without seeing the SI’s, the NOR or knowing the specific race, would make it tough to comment.

I’d guess, that with a full compliment of crew the answer 9 times out of 10 would be no.

Now that I know what to look for I found this in the Sailing Instructions for Newport - Ensenada

19.5. CRUISING EQUIPMENT PERMITTED

19.5.1. Whisker poles may be used and are limited in length to 1.4 times the “J” measurement.

One end shall be attached to the foremost mast.

19.5.2. Double headsails (not spinnakers) double head rigs, and multi-masted vessels are

allowed.

19.5.3. Power winches are allowed. This changes RRS 52.

19.5.4. Steering vanes and autopilots are allowed. However, it is the responsibility of the skipper to ensure that someone is always in position to take command of the boat in an emergency.

Thanks, this was the topic of an arguement (debate?) among the race crew yesterday.
