My daughter moved to Seattle about a year ago to start her life and is now settled in enough she would like to get involved with the sailing community on a will-work-in-exchange-to-crew basis. She has some but limited sailing experience, but being a BOI (born on the island - Galveston) she does have saltwater in her veins. Any suggestions on how to begin searching for opportunities? One caveat, to save $$$ she sold her car and is thus reliant on public transportation, so she most likely would be limited to the greater Seattle area. Thanks.

Have her pick up a copy of '48 North'... local sailing mag. Visit West Marine and other chandleries to find one and also check the bulliten boards. Of course, there's the local Yacht Clubs.

Most racers are eager for competent crew.

The local yc will be the ticket, have her get online and contact the commadore, or the fleet captain of the yc. Have her tell them that she wants to crew on some ones boat. There are going to be allot of choices for her to make from here. The best would be for her to find out when the local fleets race and show up on the docks about 2 hours early. All she has to do is ask around, and someone will take her up on the offer.

Call the local Clubsand walking the docks on race days to meet people are both good ways.

Also, North, UK, Elvestrom-Sobstad, Quantum and Ullman all have lofts in the vicinity. If a boat is racing, they are customers of one of these guys. They always know who is looking.

Is she looking at racing, or just getting on the water to sail?
This spring, there is the Tuesday night duck dodge on Lake Union. http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/1114/ It is a faily laid back racing series.
Also the Sloop Tavern has a racing series. http://members.aol.com/slooptavyc/
