I managed to get my hands on a free, fairly old (late 80s?) Forespar tiller extension that's in perfect shape. The problem is that the sockets Forespar now makes to receive the swivel end of their extensions are too small to receive the pin on this older model. I've talked to Forespar and they don't have any sockets that would work. Any thoughts on where I could find one?
(The extension is gold aluminum - twist to extend - with a black rubber ball to hold on to.)
Take it to the hardware store and see if it fits in an copper tubing, if it does, then flare the top of the tubing and tap it in, the detent balls should hang up on the bottom of the copper tubing and lock the extension in place. (If you have cut the tubing to the right length.) Or go buy a new extension, I must admit I don't use mine much, the 25 cockpit just doesn't need it often. I lived buy one on my last two boats and it was the first thing I bought when I got a 25.
I have one of the newer ones and use it once in a while. I'd think you could just get away with drilling a hole of the correct size in the tiller, unless you plan to use it all the time and were worried about wearing the wood. In that case, over drill the hole, fill with Marine Tex, then drill the correct size.
Mine does not fit really tight but its never been a problem and never pulled out.
