Have the old style rudder on my 83 boat. In taking off the pintles, I find a small crack running perpendicular to the rudder eminating near one of the screw holes. Is this fixible? Can it be ground out and successfully repaired?
Seems like I'm in the middle of a hello of a lot of projects 30-days away from putting boat in for the season. All the teak in the basement with three coats of laquer. Backs need to be done yet. Wife says no more stink. Too cold out side. New window seals on order. Port main bulkhead stuck in boat. Chain plates out. Rudder crack. Seems like I need some crack.

Many of us have had trouble with the old style rudder and have switched to the new balanced model after a major failure. Sooooo, unless you just want to bite the bullet and order the new rudder, you'll have to widen the crack to check for internal damage. If the damage is limited to the fiberglass it should be easy to repair with some type epoxy filler and resin. I believe you will find some repair optons in the archives if the damage is more than skin deep.
