Just got the MAX 15 to replace a defective MAX 10 portable. I plan to "mount" it in the port coaming cubbyhole, run the power cable thru a hole at the rear, and down to my 12V battery. The transducer I'll attach to a retractable rod extending down from the port catbird seat. This simple arrangement avoids drilling holes in the transom. Not thrilled with having the black transducer cable exposed but it's a compromise I can live (and sail)with. Anyone with a better/different depth/fishfinder unit installation?
Frank, most transducers will read through the fiberglass, draw backs are you wont get the water temp. Depending on how long your transducer cable is, a good mounting place would be forward. I mounted mine under the water tank in the V-berth area. I used toilet bowl wax to mount it with (a clean new one of course) no holes to drill no epoxy to mix. Its been there 2 years now and no problems. Just ball up the wax and stick it to the hull where you want the transducer and then press your transducer deep in the wax avoiding any air pockets. It will stay there unless you put it in place it could get knocked around. That's why I placed mine in the small area under the water tank. When I researched areas to put the transducer up front seemed to be the place most recommended to avoid any under water turbulence the keel makes, many said it could interfere with your readings on the depth finder. But if your cable is not long enough to reach the v-berth area you could try in the aft compartment behind the battery. You should try to keep it as level as you can when installing, you may have to try several spots to get a good reading through the hull but if your using the wax idea that's not a problem if it don't work in one spot just peel it up and try another. This way you could keep your cable concealed below and not over your stern.
Tom, aft of my battery is a holding tank, so I would have to set the transducer to the right of the battery, facing aft. What is the bottom construction of the 250 at that point? If it's "sandwich foam/fibreglass, it won't work. But if solid glass it MIGHT work at that point. I'll try it there first.
