How thick is the hull of my '01 250 just to the port side of my aft battery? Single layer fibreglass or foam sandwich? Can a depth transducer be set there and get an accurate reading?
Frank, the hull on the 250 is 5/8" thick of glass. There is no foam in the hull. I mounted my transducer forward of the keel also. I wanted to know the depth before I hit anything to give me a fighting chance of avoiding it if I was quick enough. Knowing the depth after I smack ground was kind of like closing the barn door after the horse got out.
Thanks, Frog. I'm pretty well locked into mounting the 'ducer in the stern based on where I want my unit placed, and direct connect to the battery. I don't anticipate sailing in shallow water out here on the Left Coast
If you do mount the transducer there, you will need to fair it to get it to point straight down, or it will lose some accuracy.
Also, I don't know why, but everything I've read says that depth transducers need to be mounted forward of the keel on sailboats. The turbulence from the keel messes up transom area mounts. I think you are talking about a through the hull (no hole) transducer, so you could try it, see how it does, with no risk.
All I need is "ballpark" accuracy, i.e. depth primarily and bottom contour. Fish I could care less about. For 90 bucks delivered it's the most cost effective depth sounder I could find online.
Similar topic, anyone know the thickness of the area around the windows? We're putting up curtain tracks that are going to be screwed in place, don't want to have screw points sticking outside around or in the window plastic. I have 1/2" SS screws that will penetrate about 3/8ths. Risky?
