I would like to add a strip of sunbrella onto my furling genoa to protect sail from the sun. I have seen numerous vessels with this feature. Any suggestions on where I could get this done? How much it would cost?
I know this will decrease the effectiveness of the sail but boat is more for crusing than racing.
Thanks

Not only do you need a cover along the leach but also along the foot. I would guess just under $300. You could always build a sock to pull up over a furled sail if you had a spare halyard.
I'm in the process of making a sock for the reasons mentioned. Unless your sail is new, I wouldn't add the uv( cost) to the sail, I'd get a sock. Then, when it's time to repair the sail, you can decide to repair or buy new. In the long run, the money seems better spent. The cost is about the same for the sock or the uv cover. At least that How I see it at this point.

First, what is the condition of your current genoa and is it a purpose built furling genoa?
The reason I ask is, if the genoa is on the downward side of its useful life or was a converted hanker, it might be more prudent to buy a new headsail instead of having your current sail updated, especially if your current sail has spent significant time in the sunlight without a cover.
Say it costs $175.00 (?) to install a cover on a $200.00 sail. Take that $175.00 you would have paid for a cover, add it to the $200.00 you sold the sail for on eBay, kick in a few extra dollars, and bam!...you got a brand spanking new genoa with a UV cover.
As for the sewn on UV cover decreasing effectiveness of the sail, the main reason people invest in roller furling is for the convenience, not performance, and really, what does a cover cost in speed,...2/10th of a knot? Most people lose much more than that through improper sail trim.
As for furler socks, personally, I would not spend thousands for a roller furling setup only to use a sock that takes away from the convenience that I paid good money for.
That is the issue I am having. I have furler and dodger and do not want to go with sock because I do not want to have to walk up there to take it off. The sail is old, and the life is definetely ending soon, but for some reason my heart is set on getting the UV cover is sunbrella blue to match the rest of the boat.
I agree that best would be to buy new sail with UC cove r already installed but the money is just not there right now!
