Can anyone recommend a good racing video or DVD I can buy, one that introduces racing rules etc, and illustrates them, maybe some basic tactics? Can be more than one to buy, does not have to be all in one.
I used to race Coronado 15s 20 years ago, but the only rules I can remember are starboard tack and don't hit the committee boat . I am looking for the video so I can watch racing, and hopefully it will bring a lot of it back into my old brain.
I will be PHRF racing with the local fleet this summer, and I would like to remind myself a bit about what the heck I am supposed to be doing.
Oh, I seem to remember another rule about popping the beverage top just after crossing the finish line...

Kevin, the following hyperlink takes you to U.S. Sailing's short courses on the "Basics of Sailboat Racing" and on the ten "Basic Rules of Sailboat Racing." After you've done the courses, there's also a short test, to help you see if you understand them.
Thanks very much, that was very helpful. I got 19 out of 20 after going through the class, and it did bring back a lot. I don't get question 14 about overlap, I answered C & D only, and that's wrong, but I don't know why.
You can also take a look at UK sails, they used to have a fairly large set of racing rule online questions. Also Highly recommended - Dave Perry's understanding the racing rules of sailing - which is now on our links page along with a few other books in the same vein.
16/20 I missed 9, 14, 17, 18...I thought I was going to do a whole lot worse, since the majority of my answers were pure uneducated guesses! (I actually got one of the flag questions right even though I hadn't a clue)
A couple of years ago, I started reading a little on racing thinking that maybe I could crew on someone else's boat during the WNATR series here. I purchased what was supposed to be an easy reading rules book for 2001-04, but try as I might, it was like reading tech manual. By comparison, it made the Rules of Golf seem like a "See Spot Run" book!
After crewing for two years now I still have questions about the rules and what happens under the situations. I quess thats why there are rule books, and it seems that at any protest hearing the books always get pulled out and both sides think they are in the right.
Our first Wednesday night race last year we were on Starboard and another boat was coming towards us on port. We were right at the pin mark and they tacked right beside us Lebowing us, becoming the leeward starboard boat and pinching us head to wind. We were at full speed ready to hit the line at a good pace, we ended up having to tack to miss there boat. Everyone on our boat was cussing up a storm. We didn't protest because this boat was in the lead for the series, and it was our first time out. He did his turns, and after the race came up to us and told us that he was in the wrong. Not by leebowing us, or tacking on top of us, but to the fact that you have to give the the windward boat room, yes we had to keep clear, but he was in the wrong trying to pinch us head to wind and making us tack back to port.
We have had lots of situations while racing, allot of inside overlaps at the 2 circle mark, asking for room and not getting any, dragging the mark under the keel, ect. Its all a long process of learning the rules, and how to use them correctly for your advantage..
If you want an easy to read book, get the dave perry on rules book. The real way to learn is to read them once, profess to everyone that you read them but still don't know jack, and go racing. Things become clearer when you see them on the water and can really visualize what is going on.

by the way, I scored a 19 - I was however very disappointed with some of the answers and thought there were some poorly written questions.
The last question for instance could have 2 answers be correct, depending on what flag was used as the prep flag in the race.
I also missed the overlap question 18 or 19 I think.....
I got 14 out of 20 right. All of the wrong ones were about boats close to eachother. For all of you who might be concerned, I promise to know it all BEFORE I race the nationals....LOL
I second Duane's endorsement of Dave Perry's book. He explains each and every rule in very plain language so that even I can understand them. The illustrations alone are worth the price! If you have this one you don't really need the official rule book. Derek
