hey dave
a short time ago, i had a question about the throttle damper cup.
you stated that honda had issued replacements for the problem if it was a 2003 or older.

where did you get this info?

i went to my dealer and gave him the throttle grip.
i picked it up yesterday and the tab was $75.00.

probably could have bought a new one.
40 labor
25 parts (retail)
8 (shipping on retail costs)
2 tax on parts and shipping

if you could give me a direction i would like to pursue trying to get some of the cost back.

i'm not cheap, i just don't like being taken advantage of.

Hmmmmmmm... All I can say is that my dealer at the time (I moved 90 miles from there since then) got the new part and installed it (at my marina!) either under warranty or as a "silent recall" (which car companies do to fix problems without sending out notices). If your engine was still under warranty, and this was an acknowledged flaw (which it was), your dealer should be compensated by Honda--not by you.

My dealer then was John Hermann Marine in Stamford, CT--a small operation, but he's a great guy. I don't know how he found out about the fix, but he did. I'd drop a line or make a call to Honda at:

I am curious what the throttle damper cup's function is. I just had my honda 8 serviced, and they had to replace the throttle friction clutch. Is this something similar? Do you know?

this is on the tiller and you twist it to hold the throttle at a given speed.

If you have a post-2001 engine, then I'd say yes. The cup we're talking about is the damper that (through friction) holds the throttle at a given setting--it's the black plastic collar below the throttle grip. The original didn't hold its setting properly. Honda released a new one that seems to work as originally intended. Your dealer probably got the same notice from Honda as mine did, and followed up accordingly.

That's exactly what my problem was. The throttle wouldn't hold it's speed and the problem was the black plastic collar below the throttle grip. I will follow up with the guys that serviced my engine to see what their perspective is on this. They are an authorized Honda service facility, so they should be on top of these kinds of things I would hope!
