Got my son a Sunfish for his birthday next week. Can't wait to see the look on his face. I'm taking her out for a test spin this afternoon. Most of my sailing experience has been on my C25,and I've never been on anything smaller than a C22. So, this should be interesting. Where do you store the beer on those things? Just kidding.
Hey, I just noticed that was my "1st Mate" post. Whew, it only took me 8 months. And I didn't even cheat like Gary did
Congrats on the promotion and the Sunfish--a GREAT boat! You'll love the way it skims across the water, and how your weight is a major part of the system. I've sailed ours in a 40-50 kt squall (with a big thuderstorm bearing down)--skipping across the water like a flat rock!

Did you say, "Cheat" Steve???? Well....maybe just a little. How about if we just settle this out on the water, eh?! I sailed after work this evening in 15 - 20 mph winds on a local lake, Lake Perris, in southern California (75-85degrees) from 4:30 until just after 7pm (sunset rule on the lake). Faaaantastic!!!! My 1989 wing was reefed and the 150 jennie was partly rolled in and I was still making 5.5 to 7.5 (mostly around 6.5-7.0)mph!! And I thought hull speed was 6.6. Tall rigs reefing early...I hadn't actually tried that until I rigged my 1st reef system 3 weeks ago. Now I don't dump wind and keep the boat driving relatively flat. What a difference. So now, Steve....let's settle this out on the water Gary Evening sailing is fantastic
BTW, Steve, cool idea getting your son the Sunfish. I'd like to find a used Laser for my son. Not too old and not too much money, maybe in the range of 10 boat units or so. Anyone know of one on the west coast? Gary evening sailing on Lake Perris, CA
Okay, took the Sunfish out late yesterday afternoon. Man, what a rush! The wind was only blowing about 10-12 knots but it felt like I was flying. I guess because you sit so close to the water. Downwind was fun - the little boat just kind of surfs along the the waves. I had one unplanned jibe, but managed to stay on board. Small boat sailing - very cool.
I can see it now, Steve... Your son is going to be begging for time on the Fish! And yes, I decided to get my first name into my ID, and to erase the suggestion that I'm some kinda C-25 guru, since I've only had one abbreviated season on ours--although that's following 50+ years on just about everything else!

You guys ever sail a Johnson 18 before? Now that's a bullet!!! Spent a day out on Mission Bay a bunch of years ago just after it was introduced. The asymmetrical spinnaker was a hoot to sail. A bit pricey then and still is. Hope that Catalina can keep selling the boat as they bought the company a short time ago. Check it out on their website. If I had a bit of extra cash ($9000 and more) I might be persuaded to buy one. Heck, don't we all need more than one boat around at all times?
Gary Didn't sail this evening. Went to hear my son play trombone with his Christian SKA band at a local church. Priorities must be adhered to.
