We just got back from a weeklong bareboat charter on a Moorings (Beneteau) 362 in the Abacos, Bahamas. Had a FANTASTIC time and highly recommend it to anyone thinking about doing a bareboat charter. We liked it even better than a Moorings charter we did a few years ago in the BVI; and I thought THAT was an unbeatable trip.
As kid my parents had a small plywood cabin on Sugarloaf Cay, just off of the North East shore of Marsh Harbor. I use to sail over to Hopetown in my sunfish. Oh how I miss those days!! Did you get to Tahiti Beach?
Someday, I hope to do just what you did. I can not wait!!
That's because He is very diplomatic/smart and has them located in His memeroy banks and not the digital ones for all to see, especially the Gunner's Mate. Keeping peace at home once the fun is over is the prime objective.
Bren, know you had a great time. We took three trips to the Abacos when Premeir Cruise Lines (now defunked) was going there. Visited all the Cay's and had a blast. Don't remember which Cay was the boat building capital, but it was amazing watching them build boats with hand tools.
Did you have any problems getting them to let you bare-boat? I'm interested in doing the same, but I've never sailed a boat bigger than 25 feet in length.
JohnP: Man! What a GREAT place to spend your summers as a youth! Unfortunately, it's being 'discovered' and the 'plywood cabins' are being replaced with million dollar homes. Yes, we snorkeled Tahiti--beautiful place!
Val: Yes, it was embarassing. . . me kicking and crying like a three year old, my wife pulling me by the ear and threating me with 'timeout' if I didn't get on the plane. . .
Jerry: You got it--gotta keep the peace. The 'boat builders' are the Albury family on Mon-O-War Cay--it was our favorite cay.
Chip: Send me an email and I'll be happy to fill you in. It's really simple: bren737@msn.com
PS: Did anyone get the video link to work? It's been really cranky.
The video worked fine for me...! I am jealous - love the color of the water, that clear blue water is unbeatable! I am sure you had a great time there, I know that everyone who charters a boat through the Moorings always comes back and says they had a great time. I have been told that they really take good care of you. Now to $$ave up some BU's and plan for something similar....
I left the link running and all of a sudden different crazy videos started playing on my screen. I did not do anything other than just let it run for a while.
Yes, the 'Google Video' site is a little rough as it is still in beta testing. I'm not sure why it just randomly starts playing other videos after the one you select is finished.
All things considered, I think the Abacos was about the same as BVI. There are a few things more expensive (beer, milk) and some cheaper (wine and basic food items). Restaurants are a little more than BVI. As far as the boat costs, it depends on the season. The same boat in the Bahamas for March was about 25% cheaper than in the BVI; however, just the opposite is true for June and July.
Overall we liked the Abacos because of it's serenity as opposed to the BVI. We spent half a day in Baker's Bay anchored off the huge beach with only one other boat--don't think that would happen at the Baths!
