It's more fear than hatred. You can't help wondering what that paint is hiding. Was the boat severely damaged and repaired, and then painted to make it look decent? It's a little soon to be painting a 1988 boat, unless there's a special reason.

Quick question then: what about the for-sale boats that advertise AWLGRIP in all caps? Rather proud they sound...

Huh - I guess I'm just used to seeing painted boats. Wouldn't think twice about it so long as the survey is sound

Not every boat is painted to cover damage. Sometimes boats are painted because the gelcoat is old and ugly and the owner wants to give the boat a fresh look, or perhaps change its color, but C&C does nice fiberglass and gelcoat work on their boats, and that 1988 boat shouldn't have needed a paint job. Since it was painted white, it doesn't appear to have been painted for the purpose of changing its color. The owner's incentive was either to restore its gloss, or it was painted to hide a sizable repair. Frank knows you can give dull gelcoat a spectacular shine with Vert Glass, so, it probably wasn't painted just to restore its shine. That only leaves one likely reason why it was painted, and that is to hide a major repair. It could have been t-boned and repaired by an insurance company in the least expensive way, or it could have had repairs made to a spongy, cored deck. If the owner levels with you, and shows you what was repaired, and lets you judge for yourself whether it was done right, and if the price reflects the boat's true condition, then you might still decide to buy it. There's nothing wrong with buying a boat that has been painted, as long as you know what the paint is covering, and as long as the price is reasonable. The fact that that particular boat had been painted was sending out alarm warnings. If you start asking the seller questions about it and he gives you vague answers, beware.

I see that the boat is in Pensacola. Hurricane Ivan virtually destroyed the place recently...maybe that's why the new paintjob!
