I know some of you guys have Cat 25's in the Bay Area. I'll be out there in June for my brother's wedding (I'm originally from Cali - sure miss my Carl's Jr). My best friend is coming with me - he owns a new Precision 21, so between the 2 of us, we are out on the lake all the time.
I was wondering if any of you Cali sailors might have time and the energy to take 2 Texas lake sailors out sailing on the bay while we are out there? Chris and I both make great crew, we'll bring the champagne (or the beer - your call) and the shrimp ring.
We both have this thing about being able to say "we sailed in San Francisco Bay".
Sweet! Where do you keep your boat? I'll be in Livermore for part of the time, Manteca the other part of the time (I can't help the fact that my brother lives so far away from the water).
If it should happen that Bill can't accomodate, then either Paul Zell or I might. Or maybe we all three can hook up on the east side of Angel Island and traverse the Barbary Coast or go up the Estuary for lunch.
Make a mental note to bring cool weather gear. Summer on the SF Bay is not like Texas. Likely in June it will be 65 degrees and blowing 25kts in the afternoon. Gets a little lively in "the Slot" hey Bill...heh,heh. But with two reefs in the main and the little jib up, no problem.
Between Wind Dancer, Sparky and Hey Jude you can get a memorable day.

Kim - Jim speaks true :) I keep the boat in the Berkeley Marina.. easy to get to from Livermore, but Manteca is a bit farther (hour and half maybe)!! Heres the link to the marina: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/marina/
OR you can just type in "Berkeley Yacht Harbor" in Google Earth (my slip is empty though... I'm out sailing :)).
Let me know when you guys get together. Phredde has been itching for this darn rain to end and for it to warm up just a bit, 65 degrees and 25 kts sounds good right now!
Phredde, Where are you berthed. I'm tired of pecking away at detail maintenance and am about ready to take a spin rain or shine. Like when I lived in the PNW, you just went for it even when it rained.
Well, I did it. Decided to go rain or shine. Friday the 7th an ok day, light wind pretty strong ebb. Left Brisbane and had an easy sail over towards Alameda and then across towards South Beach Harbor by the Bay Bridge. Started back, but wind light and tide strong so motor sailed for a few miles up past the ball park and towards Hunter's Point. As I neared Hunter's Point the wind came up a bit so I turned off the OB and began sailing. Wind began increasing so put in the flattening reef. That didn't last long, wind kept increasing so put in the 1st reef. Ooops wind kept increasing so had to pull down the 125 and put up the blade. Boat nicely balanced and wind clipping along about 25kts. However, strong ebb and wind on the nose to the marina so not gaining a lot of ground very quickly. Then of course it started to rain, I should say pour rain and the wind kicked up a notch more. Finally made it close enough to the channel to drop sails and motor in with OB cavitating in the bouncy chop and making about 1.5K against that stuff. Thoroughly soaked and bushed but wasn't that fun. Saturday was light winds and sunny with a few clouds. Set the autopilot and took a nap in the sun. Ahhhh SF Bay....you never know.
Paul, I was going to race Friday night and decided against it becuase of the rain. It was **pouring**!! Man, I'm sorry to hear you were out there. Instead I went out Saturday. I called for you and Jim on the VHF but no answer. It was a great day. I sailed from Berkeley through Raccoon Straits (on a single tack :) wow, to Tiburon) then under the GG Bridge (7.0 kts, with the ebb).. had some fun time in the big swells (at one point all I could see was water around me - thank god I floating:)). I went about 1/3 out towards Pt. Bonita and decided I had better turn around since it was 4:30pm and still ebbing. I went straight down the middle of the bay wing-on-wing and got back to Berkeley at 6:30. **Awesome day!!** You just never know around here... I'm still pumped! YEAH!!
My friend Chris is base manager for Sailtime here in Austin, and he tells me he can get a 33' Hunter out in SFO bay to go sailing when we are there. We just need other people to go with us that know the bay. So... anyone available Sunday June 4, Monday June 5 or Tuesday June 6 if he can get one of the boats?
Hey Bill, I went South Saturday so I could ride the current back in the light wind. I was pretty far away. Lazy sail, but noisy off the airport as the flight path that day was east/west right over me. Another reason I didn't hear you. Don't think Jim has been out since last month when I last spoke to you on the VHF.
Kimberly - please let me know when you plan on going out. My wife and I would probably like to come along.. If that doesn't work out you are still welcome for a sail on my C25!
I've been playing around some more with MS movie maker.. I had so much fun on Saturday I decided to make a video of some of my saturday voyage... my sister (landlocked in Michigan) asked for some footage of sailing on the Bay. It wasn't as much fun making this as the sailing, but still, it **was** fun :). You can sort of see the swells out beyond the GG. Anyway, here it it.. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7757816460108410918
Are y'all available for a Monday or Tuesday sail? I just talked to Chris, and he's pretty sure he can get one of the big boats on either of those days (that would be June 5 & 6). We were thinking about heading out through the gate and taking a left turn (that would be a 3000 mile left turn, but still...). Up for it? (Kidding on the Pacific crossing btw).
