I need a sun shield for a Suunto bulkhead mount compass. This is a 87 vintage compass and have been told by Andrews Compass that a cover is no longer available. This is a 4 inch diameter cutout.
Any suggestions or sources?

Thanks

Jesse, Our cover is the same and this year we got the BIG crack in it..Tried glueing it...Not that successful..I will try the glue thing again with a different glue later on. The compass is still in real good shape but ..like you..the cover.. Hmmm, I am also interested in the response. With "Leprechaun" almost in the water...

Two years ago I bought one of these from West Marine. It arrived with no cover. I contacted them and they said it was no longer sold with cover HOWEVER I could order one from them (cover was not in their catalog). So maybe it is worth a call to WM.

Hi Jesse, I looked in the WM cataloge and WM online but could not find a cover. I then brought my compass into the store and they found me one. Cheers and good luck.

Has anyone ever tried to make one of these from a mold of the compass or damaged cover?
Thanks

I bought some 4" covers for my instruments about 3 months ago from a custom plastics manufacturing place. The information is out at the boat so will post next sunday if someone else doesn't come up with an answer. They ran about 6 dollars each. Were kind of hard to find

Jesse, I was advised by some old salts earlier in the year in the forum to try using an old margarin tub or tubberware bowl. I was currious, so I tried it and by George, it worked! Lots cheaper than what you'd buy anywhere else, plus you get to eat what's inside (if you don't have a cholesterol problem that is)! Give it a shot and see. If not, I'm sure these guys will find an answer for you sooner or later - they're GREAT.

I think that was me. I have been using a blue bowl, couldn’t find a white one I liked, that is made from a somewhat pliable plastic on Peregrine for years. Looks OK and more importantly protects the compass, also a suuntu. I stuck a small piece of Velcro on the top of the compass and on the lip of the bowl, stays in place even when the boat sits through a storm.

When I bought my boat, the compass also did not have a cover and was faded and heavily crazed from the exposure, but although it wasn't pretty, it was still usable. Then on one of those gift giving occasions (Father's Day, Birthday,..etc) my wife asked me if I needed anything for the boat so I gave my "It would be nice, but not really necessary" list a once over and picked a new compass (w/cover)...Ya just gotta love those gift giving occasions!

Jesse,

I too bought a Suunto a bulkhead compass from WM and it came W/O the cover. I was able to special order the correct cover through Catalina Direct (they sell Suunto also). A bit pricey at $15 plus SH charges, but it's an exact fit.
