I am going to install a cabin top winch for my main halyard. Defender has this on sale, it's an Anderson #10 stainless steel standard winch on sale for about $125.
Any other suggestions? I'm trying to keep costs down, but haven't found much in the way of used or salvage that wasn't way more winch than I need. I seem to remember someone saying that they liked the Lewmar 7 over the 6 because the handle cleared the teak hand rail better. I don't know much about Anderson.
Also, what do winch numbers refer to? I thought it had something to do with size, but they don't seem to be standard from one manufaturer to the next; the Anderson #10 and the Lewmar #6 seem to be comperable.
Hi Rich, keep an eye on eBay. You also might want to contact Boatgt, he is parting out a C25. With all the hurricane wrecks in the south, you would think that there would be a lot of parts out there. Cheers.

I thought I read somewhere that those Marelon winches don't hold up in the heat. They expand in the heat of the sun and then don't function properly. Is that something I shlould not worry about in the North East? The New York summers can be brutal.

Older people might not have taken their blue pills that day and need the help, it's easier to put the sail back up after reefing, it is easier to put the sail up in heavy air in general.
If it is on the cabin top, it doesn't necessarily have to be for the main either. Could be for the spare jib halyard or kite halyard. they could be used in combination to fly the spinnaker.
When racing a spare set of cans on the deck can never hurt either.

Yes, sometimes it takes a quite an effort to get it all the way up, or course the crew can help out when necessary.
My boat is the C25 definition of minimalist. Two winches and a triple clutch. Mainsail and jib halyards run through the clutch. I have a fairly lengthy list of things I want to add so I'm attempting to make sure I have my priorities right. I'm thinking that main sail reefing, clam or cam cleats by my main winches (I'm using cleats to secure my sheets) boom vang and cunningham. When I see someone installing a cabintop winch, I wonder if I'm missing something.

Racers like to crank a lot of halyard tension in heavy air. Also needed, as someone else suggested, if you aren't strong enough to put reasonable tension in the halyards by hand.
Although I'm setup for running the halyards aft, I still hoist the main at the mast. Before last year, I had two cabintop winches, but now I only have one. I only have one because I needed a replacement winch on the coaming so I moved the one cabintop winch that I never used.
I'm still looking for a used Lewmar 7 to put back on the cabintop so as to give the boat visual balance and to fill the hole where the old winch stood.

No, Duane, I haven't checked Minney's yet, just eBay. I'm in no particular hurry to get a new one since I don't actually use that particular winch, but I'll give Minney's a look. Thanks for the tip.
