What is the thickness of the deck at the bow? I was about to buy a Schaefer 10" deck cleat, but then I noticed the minimum deck thickness was .63" (16mm).

Is this going to work? I thought our decks were 3/4" including the core and glass, but now I'm not so sure.

Does anyone know for sure?

I don't know the thickness and not sure if there are any specs of that data on the web. You may want to send an EMail or call Catalina directly. I am sure the info is readily available. But...if the thickness was say a tad under the minimum reqd for your new deck cleat, if there is room perhaps you can put a reinforcement plate underneath and effectively increase the strength that way. That would seem to be satisfactorily. Also, my thought is that it is not so much the cleat that would require the minimum thickness but having a larger cleat implies you have a larger load to hold and that is probably why they specify a minimum thickness. Could there be any other reason ? The only other possibility is that the support studs going thru the deck are farther apart and being farther apart, they may each sometimes have more load on them than if clsoer together. But having them farther apart also means there is more linear deck supporting it even if same thickness that may be a tad below what you need. Still.....your boat does not weigh more. It weighs the same as what would have been supported with the smaller cleat. So...I see no real concern if you use below the minimum deck thickness but still better to put a backing plate and I would then consider that with the backing plate add that in with the deck thickness at least for you case. (You will not be increasing your loads on the deck with the larger cleat.)

Rich, exactly where are you putting the cleat? If you let me know exactly where you are putting it, I'll measure the deck in that location for you on my boat.

My recollection is that the deck core is 3/4" plywood, plus the glass on both sides. (You can see it inside the skylight if you have one.) However, the liner isn't tight to the core everywhere--if you find it isn't you should probably inject a little epoxy after drilling (tape under the holes) and then re-drill, so the liner is supported when you tighten down the cleat. And make sure it's well-backed--the aft-end bolts can be pulled pretty hard by a mooring line. Should be no problem. Are you adding chocks, too?

I am going to be removing the stock bow cleats and replacing them with larger, 10" cleats in the same place. It doesn't seem like there will be enough space for chocks.

Several years ago I cut a 4 1/2 inch hole between the skylight and the anchor locker on my 1985 SK/TR for a solar battery vent. I just measured the thickness of the plug: 11/16 inch.

I measured the deck where the bow pulpit bolts on. Also 11/16"
