Last sunday was the Keelboat races #3 and #4, as my last thread you all know we stayed in for #1 and #2. It was a nice day outside a shifty wind comming from the South west then shifting to the South east. On the downwind leg we had a 180 deg shift which was interesting for the spinnaker trimmer, we dropped and rasied the Genoa. It was the first race of the year, and the first real time I was at the helm 100%. First start was slow but we managed to be with the group. The boat was sailing really well so I guess re-tunning the rig was a good thing. I had 10" of rake, 4" of sag on the forstay, 38 on the uppers and lowers were 32 and the forward lowers just snug to keep the mast from pumping. The boat still seems like it needs to point higher, but we were racing agenst 4 other Capri 25's and 3 J22's a Merit, a S2 7.9 and the S20 fleet. It amazing what a small little 3/4 fractional rig boat can do upwind, but once we rounded the windward mark we blasted off. The Second race was about the same, we had control of the line and had everyone behind us except for the s2 7.9 that leebowed us. Good times drank some beer and had a lot of fun.
In last weekends Gerry Browne regatta on San Diego Bay, there was a Capri 25 entered in class 5. It was the first time I've seen one on the water, and the first time seen one up close. Although there is marginal similarity to the C25 there really is no comparison. The cabin/interior is marginal. This is not a cruising boat. PHRF is 174 out here (compared to my 228).
Their competition was J24, C&C32, Newport 27, Catalina 27, Cal 276, and a Catalina 30. I would have raced Indiscipline in this class. The Capri got a 2nd and a 3rd to place 3rd in the regatta (the J got two bullets). In race 1 the Capri was less than 1 minute behind the J24 after a 7 mile round the buoys race.
The boats do really well if sailed flat, If you have the weight on the rail you are good to go, It will out sail a J24 in lighter air, and for that matter it will out sail a larger 30 footer if the right wind is there. I really like the boat because of the cockpit, its almost 9'-0" long and you can get 4 to 6 sailing with you while you are cruising around sitting down, I have never been on a boat quite like the Capri 25. The interior is limited. forward bith is 7'-0" long so a couple can sleep very good, and the two side births are about 8'-0" in lenth so you can really sleep good there, just no together. there is no headroom in the boat at all, but its a racing boat and for that its really nice, My second to this boat was the Merit 25. I personally think the Merit is a better heavy wind boat, and the interiors are about the same.
